Moody Month aims to become the world leader in women’s health through solutions built for and by women, revolutionising daily health for women with science and data. The Moody app offers daily hormone forecasting with personalised health plans. We worked collaboratively with the founding team to research and build the first iteration of their iOS app, their brand, and their online and social media presence.

90% of women have experienced PMS symptoms, 100% of women have hormones and fluctuating moods relating to their monthly cycle, and yet at the time, no technology existed to track, manage and plan for these monthly mood and hormone cycles. Even with hormone levels within the typical range, a woman can experience quite difficult shifts in her mood across the menstrual cycle. The app makes it easy to track cycles, moods and symptoms and shares content and suggestions for each phase of the hormonal cycle, making it easier for women to align their lives and behaviours with all the different phases of their cycle.
“There was no digital space in which to talk about or understand hormones, moods and emotions, and there isn’t a single women we speak to who can’t relate on some level to a story about mood, hormones or cycles. Moody was born from a realisation that as technology changes our lives, we need to become better attuned to our moods and bodies.”

The team worked with dietitians, endocrinologists, gynaecologists and nutritionists to create content for the app, website and social media, aligned to the ‘Rise’, ‘Shift’, ‘Reflect’ and ‘Bleed’ phases that are part of the logic of the Moody app. The content works to normalise emotions and openness about mental and physical health, and gives practical suggestions to work with each of these phases.

For example, when estrogen and progesterone are high during the ‘Rise’ phase, this might be a good time to schedule tasks that require more energy and motivation. During the ‘Bleed’ phase, when estrogen levels are reaching their lowest point, which can affect mood and disrupt sleep, it might be a good time to remove stimulant foods like caffeine and alcohol and plan a healthy sleep routine.

“Their free monthly menstrual cycle-tracking app is more than just a way of knowing when we’re fertile or going to get our periods; it seeks to educate and empower women to listen, learn, and respond to our hormonal cues and patterns on a daily basis – reclaiming our naturally fluctuating moods and cycles as strength – not pathologies to be “regulated” as the 88.3 billion dollar psychopharmaceutical industry and a 20 billion dollar oral contraceptive industry suggest.”

“Since launching in October 2018, Moody Month was Apple UK’s #1 downloaded app in December. Already featured by Vogue, Elle, The Guardian, and BBC, the app is comprised of an all-women team – from the coders to the in-house psychiatrist, nutritionist, and endocrinologist.”

“Laura, Fran and Francesca were an integral part of our extended team. They worked with us since the near beginning of our journey helping us build and iterate upon the Moody app. They have such incredible energy and a collaborative attitude, and often joined us in-house to work in an agile way with our engineers. I considered them part of our team.”
